Earthquake Update

I have quite the log going of updates on the earthquake situation in Japan on my Facebook and Twitter.  Not everyone has access to that stuff, so here's my log from yesterday.... a selection of news stories, videos, and photos.

March 11, 2:46 pm local time... 8.9 magnitude earthquake felt all the way from southern Honshu to Hokkaido.  It was a 3 in Hyogo and felt like a gently rocking boat here.  I thought I was having an odd dizzy spell until I realized that it was an earthquake.

You can get the latest earthquake reports from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

6pm, the tip of the new Tokyo Tower BENT.

Friends in Tokyo were stranded where they were overnight and worried about going out because it was so crazy outside. Trains and subways were shutdown. One friend walked 2.5 hours from work to get home.

After work I went grocery shopping then put on the news. I recorded some clips from my tv and compiled them into a video. I call this compilation Japanese News, Helmet Edition, March 11th.

Also after work, I finally got a reply to my message from my friend in Sendai, pikushi , that things were still scary, but she was OK. Whew. Her phone was dying so updates were few that evening, and phone text were unreliable... her msg that I should've gotten around 11pm, I didn't get until a few hours later at 2:30 am.

I guess I can say that I've experienced the 5th largest earthquake in the world, though that's not necessarily something I'd like to say either. From Betty Nguyen's Twitter.

NBC Chicago wrote a report on locals living in Japan. I MADE THE NEWS! Though not exactly what I want to be in the news for.

The morning of Saturday, March 12, gave us daylight to see the damage. Here I present you with my 2nd video compilation... Morning New: Ibaraki's broken bridge & Sendai Airport edition

Whoa whoa who fellow peeps on Honshu, it looks like the strength of The Big One shifted the earth's axis and moved the main island of Honshu 8 feet.

Just one video clip this time. Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture. Tsunami waters flood into the town. I can't imagine being a resident and watching this happen to your home. There are no words.

Japan... still shaking. Reporters still wearing helmets in the studio.

US response: Operation TOMODACHI

9,500 unaccounted for in the town of Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture. That is nearly HALF the town's population.

My next news compilation.... just general clips of destruction. It's amazing to see families walking out of the rubble.

News paper headlines from the day:

In the first photo you can see a small map that lists the strength of the earthquake in various locations on Honshu. The 2nd photo is people lining up to use the pay phone.

Today is a new day. The country is already being awoken to tremors and shaking. Stay tuned for another day's reports.
